The South African Table Grape Industry (SATI) is a unique partnership between
growers, exporters, and other industry stakeholders and was born out of
the need for unity in the South African industry as it moved out of the
process of deregulation and into a new era of growth. This partnership is
dedicated to maintaining South Africa’s position as the preferred country
of origin for supermarkets around the world, as well as to ensure that the
industry remains progressive, equitable and sustainable as it moves into
the future.
In recent years the South African fresh grape industry has gone to great
lengths to specifically recognise the skilled and talented individuals who
have worked their way through the ranks of the industry – known as their
“Grape Stars”, these people continue to inspire their communities, fellow
workers and new entrants to the sector.
There are many people in the industry whose quality of life and prospects
have improved considerably as a result of empowerment through opportunity
and motivation, and these individuals look set to build on their successes
in the future.
Phil Bowes, Transformation Manager at SATI: “Industry does not empower people,
it is the individuals with the necessary drive that empower themselves by
making use of the opportunities available to them. Industry can create an
environment conducive to assisting with this process, as the South African
table grape industry is doing, but it is still up to the individual to make
it work.”
